How Awesome is Suzanne Brockmann?

This awesome.

And I decided that every single penny I earned from this book, from now until the end of time--all advances, royalties, subrights, the whole enchilada--was going directly to MassEquality, an organization whose sole purpose is to preserve equal marriage rights in Massachusetts. Because enough is enough.

I hope, with all my heart, that by the time you read these words, the battle will have been won, and the citizens of Massachusetts won't be facing a ballot vote in which the majority gets to decide whether or not to take away the marriage rights of a minority group. (Could that really be possible in America...?) I fervently hope by the time you read this that my son's right to marry will have been preserved.

But if not, then I have this to say to the people who are rapidly becoming a minority themselves, people who don't think that gay Americans should have the same rights as the rest of us--

What part of love don't you understand?

To everyone else, to all the friends of Jules--past, present and future--thank you for believing, and for helping to change the world."

I love you, Suzanne. I love that you put your money where your mouth is. I love that you love your son unconditionally. I love that you gave us all Jules Cassidy to adore, root for, and admire. I love that you didn't flinch or cave in your determination to tell his story to a mass romance market. You freakin' rock.

Maybe this isn't a cause that you in blog land are interested in. I'm not a politically motivated person, cuz it's all shit and stringbeans to me, but if you do care about the rights of your neighbors (and I truly think this is a very noble cause because it epitomizes loving your neighbor as yourself) go forth and buy this book.

I will now hop down from my soap box and go read the 70 something dollars of books I just bought. Holy shit, the old man's going to freak out.

Good post.

Suzanne's final comment reminds me of the great line in Rufus Wainwright's amazing song, Going to a Town:

"Tell me: do you really think you go to hell for having loved?"

Go Suz! On a random note, I know some of the folks in the documentary on that site. I meant to post about it awhile ago, then decided not to be political.

Now I can tie it in to Brockmann. And I loved her already.
