EdNote!!! Woot for JenB! You Won the $10 Jet Mykles Gift Certificate Of M/M Reading Fantabulosity!MLM and the DIK continue to suck our time....today we will meet over at MK's place. I mean. Jeepers Creepers I will have my man today or heads will roll...
Meanwhile here at my luverly site, I'm rocking out with the fabtabulous Jet Mykles. And Sula has a mini-review of Key To Me from the Ties That Bind Anthology.
Welcome, Jet! Happy ManLove Monday!
Jet, let's just get right down to it: Heaven Sent. Delicious. I hope you don't mind my calling them snacking good food. We all love 'em. What's coming up for the boys? Any new releases?
Thank you! I don't mind at all. I know the stories are light-ish and aren't terribly deep. As you discovered, I wrote them to have a manga/comic book feel. I'm thrilled when people actually get that. Once you do, I think the whole HS experience is more fun.
Truthfully, I don't have any immediate plans for the boys themselves. They've got 9 stories
published--5 books and 4 shorts--and that's what I'd originally set out to write. However, at the very least, Brent and Hell will feature in my next rocker yaoi-boy series, the Indigo Kni ghts. They'll be producing Rabin Squire (he appears in book 5) and his band (the Knights). I expect the other HS boys will make appearances as well. I'm due to start the first IK book later this year. The current plan is at least 3 books in that series, maybe 4.
BTW, that's not to say that I'm against writing more about the HS boys. I just don't have any plan to do so at the moment.
Do you have a personal favorite of the group?
I have to admit that it's Luc. (mee toooo!) Always has been Luc. I love them all, truly I do, but I want Luc so badly it's not even funny. It mainly had to do with the fact that he's loosely--VERY loosely, like hardly anything resembling except the basic feel in my mind and plays the same instrument--based on my favorite rockstar, the one I've been drooling over and dreaming about since I was 14. (John Taylor, Duran Duran) So, yeah, Reese hooking up with his rock idol kind of hit close to home for me.
I wanted to say congrats (again) on the Eppie. Has that win instigated any changes in your life...say...hair color?
Thanks! It was awesome. I'm so glad that I went to the con. I totally didn't expect to win. Hoped, yes, but didn't expect it. Especially since I really wasn't supposed to have written that story. It was a prompt from my editor, who needed a story for the Rated X-mas anthology at Loose Id.
It's m/m/f, an off-shoot of the Leashed series.
I went to your website (**explicit**), as a good fan does, and wowie wow wow, there's some nekkid hot computer art over there. Are all the photos related to your own work? Which comes first: a vision of the character? Or the written word? And who the hell is Pet? OMG.

Thank you! I've been doing the artwork since 1998 and it's lot of fun.
Some of the images are related to the written work. In fact, the Dark Elves started as a series of images that I finally put into prose. The DE ebooks are even illustrated by yours truly. With my Leashed series and the Fox and Dragon story, there are images as well. I haven't done but one of the HS boys but that's because I covet and obsess over PL Nunn's artwork so my own artwork couldn't possibly compare. Of course, Anne Cain's now done covers for DE and Leashed and I die over her artwork so it almost gets confusing to do my own versions sometimes LOL
As for who comes first... depends. Used to be the images came first but in the last year or so the written word has been taking precedence. The boys in the Dark Elves and Leashed series in
particular don't tend to be real until I can "see" them. There are a bunch of other images in my gallery of characters I'd love to write about but I haven't figured out a story yet. Toy and Pet are two of those. Aren't they adorable? I love them, especially Toy. He's such a sweetie. Pet's a bit more pouty but I think that's because he kind of likes being punished :)
Jet is there a sub genre of erotic romance you DON'T write? Holy smokes. Looking at Loose-id there's so much to choose from! What's your fav genre or series...andmay I add that those liquorice elves are hot...
"licorice elves"! LOL Well the skin's rather special, y'see. it's rather tough but satiny to the touch and the elves naturally provide their own "lubrication", thus the glossy :D
Hmmmm, what don't I write? Haven't done f/f yet, but I've got a bit of an idea for one. Haven't done a historical, mainly because of the fear of getting the details wrong. I finally did a vampire story so I can't say I haven't done one of those. I've only done the one sci-fi and I'm not looking to go back there soon. The HS boys are supposedly contemporary but, tbh, I see them more as fantasy. I mean really, 4 hot guys in the same band and they just happen to figure out that they're gay? And they don't get flack for it? Yeah, right. But it's a nice dream world.
You see, in my mind, it's all fantasy. The elves would be one extreme in a totally made up world and the HS boys would be the other extreme in a mostly realistic world with a judicious twist. I love stories with extraordinary elements, having grown up on Mercedes Lackey, Frank Herbert, Anne McCaffrey, etc. Then I discovered Anne Rice and realized that you really could show the sex along with all the rest. it took me some years to get the courage to actually write a story for publication, but the boyfriend finally nudged me enough to get me going.
Your crit group (wait. is that what fiction/friction is? should i call them something else) talks about how you never cheat your characters. Can you explain to us what they mean? They say it with such, er, reverence.
Those are, indeed, my cps at FWF. You're welcome to call them that.

They also call me The Protector because I don't tend to be as... abusive to my characters. They're all for torture in the name of a good HEA. I guess I've done that too but doesn't seem as extreme LOL At least not physically.
As for the cheating, the heart of that lies in that my stories are ALL about the characters. So my characters all have very full lives, including things that happen off camera. I've tried to cheat and just tell what goes on in my story but it rarely works out well. When I go the distance and make them real, that's when the story sings.
OK the big dork question: how did you get into this? What's your background and why would you ever ever leave a lucrative future in theatre (snort gasp I have the same degree)?
Ah yes, the theatre *strikes a dramatic pose and listens to crickets chrip in mostly empty audience* Went to college for 4 years for that and never had a professional audition. Why? I LOATHE auditioning. Adore acting, can't stand parading in front of other people doing the "pick me pick me" thing. It's so much different with writing. Somehow less personal and scary to me.
As for the how, the professional writing started with the elf pictures. I posted them on a site called Renderotica and people kind of got into them. As I went along, I started posting snippets of a story. What ended up happening was that I pretty much wrote what later became the first 2 books of Dark Elves (the basis, at least). I'd finished most of the first story and was well into the second when a marvelous lady, one Angela Knight, contacted me and said I should write it up and sub it to epubs. I knew very well who she was, having read her books, and was floored. I figured it AK thought it was good, then maybe I had something after all. A few months later, the lovely ladies at Loose Id bought the story. It's been downhill/uphill ever since. That was at the tail end of 2004.
My background... Well, there was the acting thing. I attribute most of my characterization to that and don't regret a minute of it. After college, I started working in computers and have been there ever since. Not something I love but something I've been relatively successful at. I was doing the artwork and writing on the side. Recently I "came out" at work because I'm finally able to work part time at the EDJ to devote more time to writing!!
What's coming next?
Next story to be released is One For the Team. This one's odd for me. Completely contemporary. About a girl who's got four male best friends. She just got dumped and is wondering what's wrong with her. Her friends proceed to convince her that there's not a thing wrong with her... rather intimately. It's a story I've had half written since before DE1. I figured I'd expose it to the light of day finally.
DE5 is due out in August. If I'm good, DE6 may make it out before the end of the year.
I've got another m/m short story that comes out around November, I think, from MLR Press.
There's a shapeshifter anthology that I'm going to be in with the cps, also from MLR press, but I'm not sure that's coming out this year.
I've got another yaoi (not HS or Indigo Knight related) due out from Loose Id later this year too.

Wow. Lot's going on for Jet. I want to thank Jet for taking the time to stop by the wee blog. And, how cool is this? Jet has prize for one lucky commenter here on ManLove Monday: a $10 gift certificate to Loose-id! I'll pick some one later today, or, er, you know how that can drag out for me......ADD thing....
So everyone now knows that I get a variety of fine looking pictures delivered to me by my FOTB (friends of the blog). I can't use them all, of course, but I do like to share the love. This one is from Bridget Locke....Warning, hot pic ahead...click here

OMG... Luc is based on John Taylor!??!!!! *faints*... he was SO my favourite bass player in the world when I was (erm) 14-year-old! Now I have a whole new light when I read the Luc part of the story. I do like him the most from the group, cos he's bit of a heartbreaker!
Excellent interview - as always :)
Great interview, LB, and Jet, I am so impressed that you do both the artwork and the stories - how cool that you can so completely create your characters! (And your book covers) And what a fascinating interview. Congrats on going part time with the EDJ. One for the team sounds pretty fun. I'll be looking forward to that one.
BL: nice photo
Excellent! After that first little taste of Jet's work, I must say I am eager for more. mmm tasty! nom nom nom...
Wow I have been dying to read about the "licorice elves" ever since I caught a sneak at the cover. LOVED IT!! That's so cool that you do your own art, great interview. Now I know I must read this series and others ;0)
lastaerie~Isn't that a scream! He's just the most 80's looking guy ever.Heh. That mullety spiky hair. OMG.
CJ~If you click the link, make sure you are alone. Phew. I was sitting here click.click.click ::looks around over shoulder:: click.click.
Sula~crunch.crunch. I think you'd like these boys. They're fun stuff and came highly recommended to me from one of my favorite authors.
Sarai~ OMG. Poor Jet. They'll be henceforth known as Licorice Elves. But look at them! They look delicioulsy chewy.
Man, I sound really hungry today. I should probably go make some breakfast. My mind is more on food than men. Shocking.
I am about this . close to becoming a rabid Jet Mykles fangirl. Have y'all ever read TECH SUPPORT? It's sooo cute, and is every bit as good as the HS series. And Snagged...*sigh*...such cute boys. If you haven't read the Leashed series, you should be beaten.
I have noticed how nice she is to her characters. I never realized it was intentional. Angst is okay every now and then, but most of the time I just want a good story (with lots of hot man sex of course).
The only things I haven't read are the Licorice Elves (*snort*) and Fox & Dragon. I guess I better get my butt in gear!
Ok, I'm done geeking out now. Off to MK's for some hot DIK.
Great interview! Interesting to read about how Jet got started, etc.
BL - Veeeeery nice photo!
JenB. Tech Support is high on my list. First that cover is just sooooo naughty and oh man how much do I love that dynamic??? Second: shy nerd? That's hot. I bet he has to push up his glasses a lot.
hm.
LOL! Thanks guys
lastaerie - yep, I confess. I too was a screaming 14-yr old dreaming of the man :) The idea of Luc is based on my idea of John which is probably WAY off from the real person, but things are probably better that way, no?
carolyn - thanks! I hope you like One For The Team. I fully admit it's a romp :)
sula - if you do go for more of my works, I do hope you enjoy them!
sarai - LOL! Well the elves on the cover of the print versions don't look so, um, "licorice" but they do look yummy! I hope you like them
jenb - being nice to the characters is not so much intentional as it just kind of ends up that way :) And thanks! Tech Support and Snagged are fun. I need to find a new home for Snagged pretty soon. It's in limbo at the moment.
tracy - thanks!
lisabea - hope you got some breakfast :D thanks again
Hi Jet and LisaBea!!
First off Jet, I've never told you how tickled I am that you linked to my obscure little blog review of the Heaven Sent series. I'm glad you liked it.
I love that the series isn't heavy duty drama. Sometimes I just don't want a lot of heaviness and intensity. It's sweet, light, fun, and BEYOND hothothot! And that's not always easy for an author to pull off without the story seeming fluffy or pointless. But you make it work because you create characters we care about, who make us smile.

Bev~What a great comment. I'm with you 100%.
Bev - thank YOU!! That is exactly what the HS stories are supposed to be. Hot and fun with some guys you like following around. I know I like following them around! LOL
Okay, I totally had the John Taylor thing going in H.S. I even dyed my bangs blonde when he had the two-tone hair, remember? I was the talk of Catholic school, lol.
I love the HS series. I ripped through the whole thing in about a week a few months ago. Loved it! Brent is my fav. The man can take it. Oh. My. Can't wait to read the new series. And the licorice elves, who do indeed look sweet and chewy.
Ok why did I not get the Duran Duran thing back then? Cuz I was listening to the B52's...my god...what a nerd.
Fun interview. I just got back here from spending a whole lot of time browsing through Jet's image gallery. Sure warmed up my cold rainy afternoon! Thanks! ;)
Here I was so sad 'cuz I thought you weren't using my picture. You were just bein' sneaky is all. :)
I posted over on MK's blog. I emailed & everything trying to be a good girl, but her email went kaput. *sigh*
Judd from Caressed by Ice...yummy!
Heh. Fooled ya, didn't I? I try not to show too much weenie. Wouldn't want to lose that NC-17 rating, now, would I?
Judd is an EXCELLENT choice..but Hawke (who is a wolf, right? I mean, what the hell kinda name is that for a wolf? Like a bird/dog thing?) is my favorite. OH.SO.HOT. Older man alert thing. That would be lisabea's Achilles Heel.
Elves seem to be the unwritten character in romance. There are so much romances/erotica with vamps. weres, seal.. (bleck) it is good to see some Keeblers get some loving for a change :D
LB LOL You crack my craper up with the bird dog thing. LOL Still laughing can't stop
Lord now I have to pee, crap
Oh, I'd totally vote for Hawke, but he hasn't gotten his own book yet. *sigh* Can't wait for that one. :)
B~He doesn't need his own book. A bunch of us have chosen secondary characters. Michael will be the LAST book in Meljean's series. I understand the heroine's name is lisa!!
heh
And Sarai~I calls them like I sees them. I mean Hawke Wolf?
Lovely pic! Lovely interview too :). I like Jet's work a lot. I really enjoyed the Heaven Sent series. My favorite is Luc too, but my favorite story was Hell. Hell is probably the most original character I have met in an M/M story :). I didn't know Jet did her own artwork! It explains how perfectly it suits - better, complements - her work. Looking forward to the new books. And I need to give Leashed a try. JenB was very vocal about her appreciation of that series :-DDD.
Mary M.
Mary--By "vocal" do you mean obsessed and obnoxious? ;) I can't help it! I love that series. LOL
Now Jen, I was trying to be polite! Loooool. You ever done cheerleading? You do it pretty well. ;)
Mary
Hi Jet! Very cool interview :D
Hell is MINE, y'all. Aaaaaaall mine. I want to keep him in my sock drawer.
**snuggles him**
hehehehe. Sock drawer, Ally? That sounds so dirty for some reason. And not crazy AT ALL.
I second Ally Blue's comment (and Anonymous' vote for favourite book)...Hell is the absolute best character out there. I've re-read all the HS books, but have to admit that Hell gets read more than the others. I relate a lot to Hell, and not just because I'm short and have purple hair too! LOL
Jet, I know I've written you and told you this before, but out of all the m/m ebooks I've bought out there, I always end up re-reading yours. As you and all your rabid fangirls have said (count me as one of those, by the way), the characters come first, and that's why I fall in love with them.
Snarky
samantha - John is just... mmmmm! Always has been, still is. I just saw DD twice the other weekend and he's still... mmmm! LOL Brent huh? my poor, tortured guitarist. good thing Hell bright a little color into his life, huh? :) thanks!
lisabea - dunno why. I was ALL about DD. Then there was Adam Ant and Wham. *sigh* yeah, you can see how my taste ran
Christine - glad you liked the gallery. I really do need to get cracking on some new stuff.
babs - I'm with you, there needs to be more elves in erotic romance. I might have to think up another series once I finish book 6 of the Dark Elves. *chuckles at "Keeblers"*
Mary - thanks! Hell seems to have caught the fancy for a lot of people. I think it's the hair and his, uh, fashion sense :) But he is definitely among the characters I'm most proud of. It was nice to write someone who just is who he is and makes no excuses about it. I didn't do the HS artwork (that would be PL Nunn *envies*) but I've done images from many of my other books. thanks!
Ally - you cheated, you saw him before anyone else did *bg*
Snarky - thank you! you have purple hair too? so do I, recently, although not lavender. I went for blacklight purple :D And thanks for the lovely compliment about the rereading. I love hearing that my boys (and girls) have entertained! :)
Yay for my $10! It will be spent before I even get it.
If I had kids, they would be very skinny, because their mother would spend all their food money on books.
JenB~Pfft. Food? Who needs food? I live on Love.
Congrats on the $10 Jen!! That at least is money you won't have to feel guilty for not putting aside for your future children ;-)Poor kids...I have this vision of you engrossed in a book and your hubby playing computer games, with desperate toddlers tugging at your clothes and crying "we hungry mommy/daddy!!!"
I shouldn't find this funny, should I? :-p
Gawd. Seriously, Mary. A book addict and a WoW gamer should *not* be allowed to procreate. We're lucky to remember to feed our dogs. Children would be doomed.
*still giggling over the hungry toddlers*
I am a sick person.
I loved the interview lb. Fab stuff. I am also a Luc fan, infact after reading this I started a re read last night. AND I hate to brag, but not really, I have tech support and it is very cool. Not sure about the glasses thing though. Might have to do a re read.
I cannot wait for the new rocker series, sounds like my kinda read!
awesome interview i learnt some pretty cool facts :)
thanks :)
