American Idol, Brockmann, and Woe

I'm going to preface this by telling you that I almost missed American Idol last night (no big deal, really) but LittleGirl IM'd me from the family room and I trudged in, laptop in hand, to watch that NIT tell his comforting, kind mother, "Don't touch me!" on national TV. What. A. Douche. Where's Shirley! There is your D. of the Week.

Ok anyway, while Simon Cowell was drooling over the pretty brunettes (man does he have a thing for brown eyed girls) I happened across a review on Dark of Night.

I adore Suze Brockmann. I love her deep pov, her ability to take on the mindset of each character, her interwoven story lines, her guys and gals who BRIM with weakness while conversely bursting with physical and intellectual strength, and of course, I adore that she delivered the goods: a gay character that everyone in America liked and allowed into their reading lives. I mean: Brockmann is one of my heroes. Plus, she's always working to benefit others, either by setting up the Swabbies to find bone marrow donors or giving proceeds to MASSEquality~She's just .... OK ... Yes: Total girl crush.

What the hell am I talking about...oh. Yeah. So LAST night I've got one eye on American Idol and one on this review.

Things to note:
  • I didn't follow the kerfuffle about this book
  • I'm addicted to this series and have read each book a couple/few times
  • I'm late reading Into the Fire and I'm reading it RIGHT NOW so this is very fresh
  • I love certain story lines and, yes, I have expectations
  • And this is the important thing: I like when author's pull the rug out from under me (unless it's Butch/Vicious or the ghosting of jane or anything JR Ward does. Just. Kidding....but not really.)

In one single paragraph in the review, while some tool was trying to sing for the judges and I wasn't paying attention, every single surprise and secret was reveal. And I didn't notice until the words made there way through my ADD filter...think 5 second delay...and then having gotten to the bottom of the paragraph my eyes went all roundy and....SHIIIIIITTTTTTT! NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! Noo. no. oh.

Crap.

I mean. The entire book is ruined for me.

I haz a sad, bordering on truly pissed off, because I think this particular surprise twist must be read to be appreciated. I need to trust Brockmann to walk me through it. I need to be inside that story to forgive, forget, and embrace this new idea.

Wah.

Therefore, in the future, I promise, as god is my witness, that I will put a spoiler notice on my reviews (where necessary). Big fat SPOILER notice.

And this is PRECISELY why I didn't give away the ending to Death of A Pirate King. Spoilers undermine the hard work the author did to prepare us for the surprise, twist, switch, what ever. MEA CULPA...for what ever I may have done in the past.

SHIT. I'm so bummed. I mean Brockmann...we have to TRUST her to deliver. And now. I'm going into the book soured.

Boo.

That's pretty annoying -- although I confess to looking for spoilers on books I'm unsure about. But WARN ME FIRST, yes!

And I did really appreciate how careful most reviewers were not to spoil DOPK.

I'm totally sympathetic LB, really.

This is why if I'm following a book or TV series I never read reviews...

Lalalalalala *not listening*

...until after I've finished reading the book or watching the series. I did this with DOAPK.

However, I got caught out the other week. I've been getting all the Las Vegas CSIs out on DVD season by season and am just up to season 8. Season 9 has just started in the UK and I happened to glance (yes, glance) at the TV paper only to zoom in on a major spoiler about the end of season 8.

I'm gutted.

Jenre~I watched CSI through season...5? I love Gil so much. ::grin:: And then..I got side tracked. Possibly during season 6. I didn't watch any last year or this year. I mean...and then, the THING!! I was SO upset by that thing. And no one kept it secret!

Gutted. That's so apt.

J~It would be criminal to give it away!

You cheater head. I admit to reading the end of mysteries to see if I'm right. ::whistles:: Not that I do that with your books. Or anything.

Sula~Will do. ACK!! Is it still snowing? Still snowing here.

Ooh, Lisabea, that really bites! Something like that just can't be undone. Will you finish reading it, anyway? :-(

I'm so paranoid about things like that happening, I usually skim down reviews to the end where they've finished re-capping and actually give their opinion, so I can read that.

For my own reviews, I rarely retell the story, cause I'm afraid I'll mess something up for some one.

The worst example that ever happened to me was when I sat down to watch Gladiator on DVD, and as it started, my housemate turned to me and said, "Isn't is so sad when..." and tells me what happens in the movie. I got up and went to my room. I still haven't seen the movie.

That sucks big elephant balls. This is exactly why I don't even attempt to read a review of a book I'm absolutely going to read. I'll look at the end of the review to see their grade or rating but nothing else. Now if it's a book I'm undecided about I'll read the review but want to be warned about spoilers - which I'll skip. Sorry things got ruined for you! :(

That. Sucks. Mucho. I was at B&N today, WORKING, yes, I was, with my CP, we were plotting and brainstorming, and saw this on the shelf. But I am so behind on everything--reading, writing, life--that I wouldn't even let myself pick it up. If I touched it I knew I was a goner. I'm holding out to reward myself. I so sorry 4U.

Blogger just told me to gootinga. I think that's good advice in this situation.

This is why I never read reviews on books I want to read or might want to read b/c no one takes the time to warn people.
Sorry that it was ruined.

Aww sorry it was ruined for you. I had a snow day yesterday and read the WHOLE thing! I really enjoyed it, however, I never really had a big investment in the Dave/Sophia/Decker triangle...so no matter what happened I knew I'd like it... and I did. I hope Suz's amazing POV and storytelling will redeem the book for you!

Me? I'm anxiously awaiting more Izzy!!!!

I love me some Brockmann and just finished Dark of Night. Trust me, she works it out. It was a great read. Don't let a few spoilers wreck it for you. By the way completely agree about the douche. What an ass!

ACK! I didn't see you all here!

Hello!

Renee~Watch. Gladiator. MMMMmmmm.... Russell's thighs...mmmmm. Uhm. It's a good movie too. I know for a fact that I've done the whole spoiler thing and somewhere, at some point, I ruined something for someone...but NEVER again! Of course I'm reviewing like 6 books a year now, so not much chance of that happening again.

Tracy~I will read it, I'm just so bummed and thank you.

Sam~Gootinga is a good thing? It sounds vaguely German. I need to finish Into the Fire. Into the Storm was my fav. Izzzzzzzzy.

Sarai~I know! It's google readers fault! And Simon Cowell! Note I take no responsibility for my own stupidity.

Mollie~I will read it.Maybe while I'm flying to California. Oh that Izzy. He's a wild thing. Dave/Sophia/Decker. Well I'll tell you that I'd love to smack Decker, that's for sure.

Anonymous~He was the d of the week. Man what a ding dong. His mother should have smacked him in the head. Or Ryan Seacrest (who I have a total crush on).

I think she should of drag him out by his ear. Sometimes these little brats need to be knocked down a notch...publicly.

Oh, that drives me crazy! Happened to me when i read a review on Book Binge of all things and a pretty major spoiler was put up with NO HINT! Argh!

So, I went into the book knowing fullwell what happened. *sigh*

When I do reviews, if I'm going to reveal anything, I usually put the spoiler in white so it can only be read if you scroll over it. I also put BIG LETTERS stating it's got spoilers. Spoilers that are just thrown out randomly piss me off. Grr

Being a huge Brockmann fan like you, that would practically kill me. I'm in the process of reviewing DoN but I've got SPOILER alerts written everywhere, because really I can't see doing the review w/o spoilers, but I obviously don't want to ruin anything for anyone either.
