Stephanie Bond

I finished In Deep Voodoo and Finding Your Mojo. It's been one of those weeks where I couldn't fit in much reading, but FINALLY, I am done. That should be a clear indicator that I wasn't burning to finish these. I don't normally choose pithy, cute books with droll names. I like my romance to have teeth. And balls, but you already know that about me by now. Both books were pretty much o.k. Fun to start, great pace, interesting setting and plot. I love the town of Mojo and the quirky characters who live there, but in the case of In Deep Voodoo, I didn't particularly mesh with the heroine, Penny. She was a bit of a twit and a doormat. Not a good combo, ever, for me. I kept waiting for her to do something intelligent about her situation and that never happened. She depressed me in her unwillingness to take charge of her life. She was no Savitri, that's for damn sure. I did, however, like Gloria in Finding Your Mojo. Her life spun out of control rapidly, amusingly, and, like a Stephanie Plum novel, with great flair. The heroes? Almost indistinguishable. Too bad because the set up for the women was fun.

Biggest let downs:

1) The dialog, which seemed to consist of question and answer sessions between the heroine and various townies to further the plot along.

2) The love scenes were packed with standard copy phrases-o-lovin' that got tired, quickly. I skimmed the love scenes. Me. Just unheard of, I KNOW! In Deep Voodoo in particular. sigh.

3) The endings of both books could have been a wee bit less rushed. I like my endings to unfurl and my loose ends to tie up neatly.

Again, the books weren't terrible, just slightly above average. Makes me a bit crazy because they had so much promise!
